The Department of Anterior Segment Transplant and Optical Reconstructive Surgery was created in 1970 of the Moscow Research Laboratory of Experimental and Clinical Eye Surgery. The head of the department from the moment of foundation until 2015 was the Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, one of the closest associates of Svyatoslav Fedorov, doctor of medicine, professor Zinaida Moroz.
The main focus of the Department includes development and implementation in clinical practice of the newest technologies for the treatment of the anterior segment of the eye.
The Department’s specialists perform various types of surgical interventions, the most difficult of which is corneal transplantation or keratoplasty. Their professional qualifications enable to perform modern and high-tech operations that aim to selectively replace only diseased layers of the cornea. The Department established the first eye bank in Russia. Corneal preservation and storage have improved clinical outcomes of keratoplasty and therefore transferred it from emergency to elective surgery.
